busy, busy, busy
Anyone know who used that saying in their novel? Ice 9. Kilgore Trout. Anyone, anyone...
Last week of school, last day of classes before finals, and everyone seems to have a lot of business to get done. Of course the computer system at the school decided this weekend would be a great time to go down. I have been trying to keep a low profile around campus. Feeling emotionally drained and physically beat down, and I know that being around campus means more emotional drain and likely physical deterioration as well. I 'spose they are connected so closely that they are synonymous. There was a discipline issue at the end of the week where one student wanted to physically beat another with a chain purchased for the occasion. WTF! Dealing with the slow beaurocratic machine it took to get to the root of the problem was really tough. Sometimes I wish the equation for action and reaction would be much simpler and cleaner, but I am a part of a learning institution and it is necessary to assuage all parties of any scenario. The chain incident didn't ever make it close to seeing the light of day, but the fact that a teenager thought that was the thing to do is scarey.
Katie and I rallied to the front range on Friday. We drove to Colorado Springs to check out the American Furniture Warehouse - a chain with sweet deals and commercials filled with monkeys, tigers, and other exotic animals that I still can't figure have anything to do with furniture built in North America. Anyhow, it was a treat to get into the city and be surrounded by all the commercialism and consumerism. It made me want to chain smoke, slather myself in deoderant, and eat a lot of fast food. We waded through more furniture than seemed possible to build in a lifetime - and this was one of many stores. There were a lot of characters wading with us. I like seeing what "average" Americans look like. Crested Buttians tend to be pretty athletic and moving quickly, but the Colorado Springians seemed to graze a little slower and push around a lot more girth. We tried not to stare and stay focused on the project at hand, but it was tough. We didn't buy anything, but got some great ideas for Saturdays shopping spree.
We spent the night with Emily and Josh Moore and their 9 month-old baby boy, Drake. We got in late, Josh and Drake were already asleep, and spent a little time with Emily before we all crashed. Katie didn't sleep well between being hungry, having to pee, and not getting comfortable - all issues we have been going through as she gets further into the pregnancy. We were up at 6 with Drake and Emily. He is a beautiful kid with blue eyes and curly blonde hair. A big boy. He was happy to entertain Katie and I with his toys and raspberries. It was nice to see Emily and Josh as well. They have been working hard, but seemed happy and looked great. We had a nice breakfast downtown - The Olive Branch, if your ever in C-Springs I highly suggest you stop in - before having to head our seperate ways. Josh and Emily to Work, Drake to Grandmas, and Katie and I north to Denver.
Shopping isn't that fun. Neither is spending a boatload of money, but we managed to do it pretty well. We rented a 6 x 12 U-Haul trailer and towed it down with the XTerra. Filled that sucker up with consumer goods and hauled it back up into the mountains. It was a huge load. Full trailer, full truck, and a huge matress strapped down to the roof rack. We were lucky it wasn't too windy. If we caught a gust just right it would have sent us sailing.
We are still unpacking but getting pretty comfortable in the new place. The builders are buttoning up the exterior. The yard is still a huge patch of dirt, but the potential is looking good. When I wake up at night I look out the window and see an infinity of stars and feel like the luckiest man alive.
