Nuevo Mexico

Big Changes. I took a job with a surveying company and will likely spend a big chunk of my winter in NM. It is a crazy departure and something I might not have pursued had my cushy life stayed cushy, but it is an opening to explore something new in a place that is, well, enchanted.

I will have to leave the family behind. The first trip will have me down there for two weeks. There are something like 100,000 points that need to be located and physically marked. The new boss says that should take about four months. I have a million questions myself about this job, but have been in the dark a bit because the whole process has been very informal to this point. I have only met my boss one time and that was in the Talk of the Town - an infamous watering hole located right in the liver of downtown Crested Butte. We sat down and he showed me a map of a past job. Looks like I will have to use GPS to locate the spots and mark them with whatever tools they give me. Sounds like a lot of long days outside hiking and learning about new technology. These are all things that seem interesting to me.

Driving away from Katie, Kai, and Gus seems mad. I don't want to do it, but recognize that life is full of trials. Katie and I have been pretty stressed about work and income, but I know that the whole country, and world, seems to have similar anxieties. I have a job. So, I will have to separate from the family for a while to make ends meet. It is sad and not something I would have anticipated, but it is something we can work around for the time being. Seems like my generation has not been asked to sacrifice too much. We've had it real easy. I think about The Grapes of Wrath when I start to feel bad for myself and things come around.

I am continuing to work as hard as I can on Crank Collective. Not sure if I have mentioned this site or not, but it is a project I was invited to join after two of my friends, John Martin and Phil Stern, thought up the idea and had the basic site built up. If you haven't checked it out, it is a social networking site for mountain bikers. There are forums, product reviews, photo and video galleries, and our marquee feature is a GPS trail mapping system that is super cool. Anyhow, it is something I am pushing to move from glorified hobby into career. I love the creative aspects of the process and being involved with bikes, bike riding, photography, and writing.

So, I will have more substantial information in the next two weeks about life for the Chorlton Clan.
